Why aren't we geeks, you ask?
The origin of the word geek is believed to be from (1515) the Low German geck, "a fool, dupe, simpleton", from an imitative verb found in North Sea Germanic and Scandinavian, meaning "to croak, cackle," and also "to mock, cheat." In 1916 it was used as U.S. carnival and circus slang to mean "sideshow freak," and is defined as a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake or a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked.
